Our work in West Africa

Last year alone, we supported more than 13,000 cataract operations in West Africa and protected over 6 million people from the threat of river blindness.

As well as providing treatment that can prevent sight loss and surgery that can restore sight, your gift could also assist with our education work; training specialist teachers so that blind and visually impaired children can get support in school.

"I believe that the inclusive education scheme will enable blind children to grow up integrated in society" Teacher, Lamin Fatty, The Gambia

Aissettou lost her sight due to cataract in both eyes and was unable to continue working as a farmer or cook for her family.

After a successful operation on her left eye, Aissettou was keen to have cataract surgery on her right eye as soon as possible, so travelled for four hours to receive treatment.

After the bandages were taken off, Aissettou was very quiet for a few minutes and then she suddenly shrieked with joy.

"I can't believe my eyes! I look forward to seeing my husband; it is two years since I have seen him with both eyes" Grandmother, Aissettou Toure, Guinea
