Combating childhood blindness

The Combating Childhood Blindness campaign aims to reduce childhood blindness and create an infrastructure for preventing childhood blindness in Bangladesh by 2013.

When it comes to restoring sight, this work is incredibly time sensitive. Unless a child's sight is restored before they are seven years old, there is a real risk that it may be too late for them to learn how to see.

Fortunately, Rekha Moni recieved her sight restoring cataract operation when she was just three years old.

Nizam's sight started deteriorating when he was just four years old due to cataract in both eyes.

His parents could not afford to pay for medical treatment, but luckily Nizam was identified by a one of Sightsavers' partners and given a free cataract operation.

After surgery lasting 20 minutes, Nizam's sight is fully restored and his family are overjoyed.

Now he will be able to go back to school and get an education that will give him the best possible chance of a bright future.

Two days after his cataract operation, Nizam is recovering well and playing happily with his friends.
