Trachoma is a highly contagious infection which is spread through direct contact and is easily carried on hands, clothing and by flies that land on the face.

Repeated infections can eventually lead to permanent blindness, but trachoma is such an easy disease to prevent and can be treated quickly and effectively in its early stages with antibiotics.

Your gift could go towards treating 12 people for trachoma.

Children from a small village in Uganda are measured to determine the dose of antibiotics required and those with visible symptoms of trachoma are given treatment.

Kasuleta is a small, rural village in the Kaleri District of Eastern Uganda. Very few of the children are in school and poverty levels are very high.

The entire village receives a vital antibiotic which treats communities suffering from trachoma, and prevents the development of this painful condition. The tablets need to be given once a year for five years for them to be fully effective.

12-year-old Joan receives her annual dose of antibiotics to protect her from the threat of trachoma.
