A tumbling 'E' chart

£10

A tumbling 'E' chart is used to test visual accuracy. It is used with younger children or illiterate adults who can't recognise letters.

The letter 'E' is turned in different orientations so the patient can simply indicate which direction each 'E' is facing.

Community volunteer, Alagie, uses a tumbling 'E' chart during village screenings. He is responsible for eye health care for around 250 people in his village.

"Sight and healthy eyes are of utmost importance and I am proud to help people to see again" Alagie Touray, The Gambia

Muanamadane had been completely blind for over two years due to cataract in both eyes.

Two months after an operation to remove the cataract in her right eye, she returned for surgery on her left.

The day after her operation, Muanamadane's bandage was removed and slowly her eye began to focus. Her vision was tested using a tumbling 'E' chart to assess how well her sight had been restored.

For the first time in two years, Muanamadane was able to see clearly in both eyes.

"I am now in a position where I can help out round the house. This makes me feel good" 68-year-old Muanamadane, Mozambique
