£230

An ophthalmoscope is crucial in determining the health of the retina and spotting problems early on.

It aids the diagnosis of a wide range of sight problems, enabling the appropriate treatment to be prescribed, which can lead to improving the sight of someone living in one of the world's poorest countries.

"I receive confirmation every day that our work really changes the lives of people" Senior ophthalmic nurse Mustapha Jagne, The Gambia

Widow Noria cares for 15 grandchildren and is the only breadwinner of her household. Her only source of income is from growing food on her land which she also tries to sell.

Noria's vision started to deteriorate a year ago and she has found it difficult to support her family. She was so desperate to have her eyesight back that she travelled over 400km to get treatment.

Her eyes were tested with an ophthalmoscope and she was diagnosed with cataract in both eyes and referred for surgery.

Noria can't stop smiling after her operation and clapped her hands in thanks.

"Now I will be able to look for other means of support for my family" 78-year-old Noria Moonga, Zambia
