Adult cataract operation
Rita Akter after cataract surgery in her right eye
£30
Bangladesh is one of the world’s most densely populated countries. The majority of the country’s eye care facilities are based in the big cities, but around 80% of the country’s population live in rural areas, many of them living below the poverty line.
Sightsavers in Bangladesh
Sightsavers has been working in Bangladesh since 1973. We work with local partners to bring eye care within reach of the poorest communities. Together we have helped to develop services for people who are irreversibly blind, as well as ensuring children who are visually impaired get a good education.
Your gift will help to continue our work in Bangladesh and could help provide:
- Cataract surgery, restoring sight to people in some of the poorest areas
Training and education for people who are visually impaired or blind, giving them an opportunity to lead independent lives - Screening in schools and clinics
Your gift will support Sightsavers’ work in Bangladesh
Country gift:
The gift you’ve been given can bring a brighter future to some of the poorest people in Bangladesh. Thank you.

Rony Akhtar, aged eight from Dhaka in Bangladesh, developed cataracts around the age of four. His family moved to Dhaka about a year ago when Rony’s sight deteriorated to try and find treatment for his condition.
Rony and his family live in a house made of corrugated iron which has no door, in one of the slum areas of the city. The house sits beside a small, heavily polluted lake which is the only source of water for the community.
Rony was identified by one of Sightsavers partners in the area and his family were delighted when they were told that he could have his sight restored through surgery at Islamia Eye Hospital.
The day after his surgery Rony was totally transformed from the quiet, lost little boy who could not join in cricket games with his friends. Posing for pictures like a pro and laughing and joking, it was amazing to see the difference.
