“It will make such a difference to her life. I can stop worrying so much about her now”Rasheedat Yusuf, Nigeria

A cataract operation is an incredible way of completely changing a child's life. With one operation, a child who was blind could regain their sight, which means they can then learn how to read and write at school for a brighter future.
This gift is especially time-sensitive - if a child with cataract isn't treated before they reach the age of seven, they are very unlikely ever to regain their sight.
Two-year-old Zainab Yusuf from Ilorin in Nigeria (pictured right with her mother Rasheedat), had cataracts in both eyes, which had become so dense she couldn’t see anything. After the operation it took Zainab a while but she gradually started to see properly for the first time.
This gift could help a child in the developing world to see again.

Peace Oladapu from Ilorin in Nigeria is just four years old. Her mother, Victoria, first spotted that she had cataracts in both eyes around two yeas ago although it is thought that she had them since birth. Peace only had slight vision when she looked at things very closely.
Peace has been going to school for around six months. She was able to listen and understand in class but the only problem was that she couldn’t read or write.
At home she was very energetic and liked to run around. Victoria had to keep a close eye on her and remove any obstacles that she would bump into. She would play with other children but it would often get a bit too much and she would go home and play with her toys on her own.
Victoria cried throughout the operation; “I was so worried and could image the pain Peace was going through. I waved her goodbye when she went into the theatre and I wasn’t sure I would see her again, it was very upsetting”.
Victoria’s fears were soon put to rest when Peace came round after the operation. “She couldn’t see anything in the distance very well before, but now with the operation she can. It’s wonderful.
Peace will lead a much more independent and free life and be able to mix more with other children and do better at school”.
