£100
It’s an amazing fact that 75% of all blindness is preventable or curable and often only at a minimal cost. For someone who is blind, having their sight restored is the greatest gift of all as it can also give them back their independence. As well as providing treatment that can help to restore sight, Sightsavers also assists with the rehabilitation of those who are irreversibly blind – helping them to make a better future for themselves. Your gift could help provide:
- Protection against river blindness for villages in west and central Africa
- Cataract surgery, restoring sight to people in some of the poorest areas
- Training and education for people who are visually impaired or blind, giving them an opportunity to lead independent lives
This gift can bring a brighter future to some of the poorest people in the developing world

Rukuyya’s story is just one illustration of how the gift you've been given could help to transform lives. Rukuyya Ibrahim is from a village called Chikaji, which is very close to Zaria in Nigeria. She is 80-years-old and lost her sight around two years ago to cataracts. Rukuyya explained ‘When I could see I was active and able to go anywhere I wanted. Now I can’t move anywhere without bumping into things so live with my son and his family.’
The day after her cataract operation on one of her eyes, it is time for the bandage to be removed. Rukuyya relaxes and starts to look around and see things around her for the first time in two years. She has not seen any of her grandchildren who were born since she went blind and is eager to go home to meet them.
Rukuyya is still frail when she gets home, but she goes inside and immediately seems much happier and more relaxed. She smiles and looks adoringly at some of the young grandchildren that she has never seen.
‘I am looking forward to playing with my grandchildren. I’m glad to return home with so many people to greet me.’
