Repeated trachoma infections had turned to trichiasis, where the eyelashes turn inwards and scrape the eyeball. This had made her right eye sore and itchy and she could no longer see properly. The pain was really starting to affect her life; even cooking was becoming difficult as the smoke irritated her eye, and made her eyes water. If left untreated the trichiasis would have eventually led to her blindness.
Okaonaga was able to have lid surgery at a Sightsavers supported hospital in Salima, close to her village. "If I was afraid I wouldn't have come" she told us.
At home following successful surgery the transformation of Okaonaga was remarkable. The surgery not only stopped the pain in her eyes, but also halted the inevitable onset of blindness and allowed Okaonaga to return to a pain-free life.
