Dr Alfred Midaho carries out over 300 cataract surgeries every year at clinics throughout the Morogoro region of Tanzania.  Each of these surgeries has the potential to give someone their life back.  But cataract surgery is a skilful and delicate procedure, requiring specialised training.  More cataract surgeons are needed in the developing world to help people blinded by cataracts.

Mwajuma Salum had lost the sight in both of her eyes due to cataracts.  She had been blind for over 6 months before coming to an eye clinic at Magubike, Tanzania where Dr Alfred Midaho performed an operation on each eye to remove her cloudy lenses and replace them with clear plastic ones. 

Her cataracts had meant Mwajuma had lost her independence and ability to move around at home, she was very depressed and said she missed being able to see her family desperately.  The morning after her operation, her bandages were removed and Mwajuma was overjoyed to be able to see clearly again. 

She now looks forward to a brighter future.  A fully trained cataract surgeon can perform hundreds of operations a year to help more people like Mwajuma.
