"If patients can see again, then I feel happy indeed. I know the patient will publicise the success and other patients will follow."Dr Alfred Midaho, Tanzania

A cataract operation can be life-changing, after a short operation someone who thought they would never see again can regain their sight and independence.
Dr Alfred Midaho carries out over 300 cataract surgeries every year at clinics throughout the Morogoro region of Tanzania. Each of these surgeries has the potential to give someone their life back. But cataract surgery is a skilful and delicate procedure, requiring specialised training. More cataract surgeons are needed in the developing world to help people blinded by cataracts.
This gift can train another surgeon to carry out sight-saving surgery.

Her cataracts had meant Mwajuma had lost her independence and ability to move around at home, she was very depressed and said she missed being able to see her family desperately. The morning after her operation, her bandages were removed and Mwajuma was overjoyed to be able to see clearly again.
She now looks forward to a brighter future. A fully trained cataract surgeon can perform hundreds of operations a year to help more people like Mwajuma.
