Providing screening sessions for school children is an effective way of spotting problems with sight early on.  Reaching children when they are young gives Sightsavers an improved chance of solving any problems and preventing sight loss.  When 75% of the world's blindness is preventable or curable, you can see how vital these screening sessions can be.

Jayaraman had congenital cataract in both eyes.  At 4 1/2 years he couldn't see the board at school from a distance and had great difficulty doing his homework as a result.  When he was moved to the front of the class he could do homework, but still had trouble seeing.  His sight got so bad, he could only recognise his mother Lakshmi when she got very close, not from a distance and had difficulty playing as he couldn't recognise his friends.

After a school screening he was diagnosed with bilateral congenital cataract.  Jayaraman had a cataract removed from his left eye, then once that settled down, he had the other cataract removed a few months later.

Now he can recognise his mother from afar. She says: "I'm happy that now he has no trouble at school and no complaints from teachers. He is happier now and he can play with his friends again."
