“We never imagined Arif would be able to see again”
Arif's father, Bangladesh

£760

A portable slit lamp allows doctors to look at the detailed structures of the eye, detect sight-threatening conditions and assess whether an operation can be performed.  Having a slit lamp helps in making an accurate diagnosis and getting the best possible outcome for patients.  In the developing world, the purchase of a slit lamp can be out of reach for many health centres, meaning doctors have to use less reliable equipment.

Arif from Bangladesh had a cataract operation to restore his sight after having his eyes carefully examined with a slit lamp.

This gift can provide a slit lamp for a clinic in the developing world

Julie Arrey was diagnosed with cataract in both her eyes after having an examination with a slit lamp.  Prior to her operation, Julie had been forced to give up working as a farmer which had put an extra burden on her family. Her sight had been deteriorating for 3 years and for the last six months, Julie had not been able to see at all.  Her eldest daughter had been looking after Julie who needed help with all day to day activities.  After her cataract operation Julie's sight was much improved and she sang a song of celebration with her daughter.
