Education is a way out of poverty, but it's hard to learn when you haven't got the right materials. The gift of Braille will help children who are blind to read, study and learn at local schools alongside their sighted classmates. Getting an education can give these children the best possible chance to lead independent, fulfilling lives.

This gift can help provide enough Braille materials to last a student for a year.

Afsath has been blind since birth. Until she was about 8 years old Afsath had not had any education and was left at home as her parents did not know she could go to school. She has now been in school for a couple of years after being identified by a Sightsavers' partner as someone who should be getting an education.

Afsath has gained a lot of confidence since starting school; she has a best friend and enjoys her studies. She is learning Braille and enjoys learning the Tamil and English alphabets. She also loves music and singing with the other children. Afsath's favourite teacher is Dheeshe, a specialist teacher helping ten children in four schools and two at home. She has seen a real improvement in Afsath and tells us: "It was difficult for Afsath at first, but now she knows her alphabets in Braille and is very happy to be at school"
