2 trichiasis operations

Two trichiasis operations
"I am glad to have had this operation I will tell others to go and see the trachoma monitor. It is like a miracle"
Nasha Kilinta, Kenya

£10

Trachoma is a disease which affects millions of people in Africa and Asia today. Each infection leaves some scarring on the inside of the eyelids and repeated infections over the years cause trichiasis. This is when the eyelids turn inwards and scrape against the surface of the eye. If left untreated, people can go slowly and painfully blind.

Nasha had suffered years of pain before her trichiasis operation; sometimes it prevented her from doing her beadwork but after the 20 minute operation she could look forward to a pain-free future.

This gift can help provide two operations to stop the pain and scarring before it's too late.

Athumani Chereheni with his family

Athumani Chereheni is and married with 2 children and 4 grandchildren. He had suffered for years with repeated trachoma infections in both eyes. In recent years he was unable to continue his paid employment as a storekeeper and watchman, due to his sight deteriorating. He increasingly had to rely on his family to cultivate his small farm and he has been feeling very concerned for the family's future.

Athumaini needed an operation to relieve the pain in both eyes - his eyelashes were turned inwards and causing not only severe pain but also threatening to blind him. A Sightsavers funded eye camp meant Athumani got the treatment he needed for free.

After his operation, we met Athumani at his home - his face was so much happier and he laughed as he told us he'd be back on the farm as soon as his stitches were removed. Buying this gift can give 2 more people their lives back.
