Smriti Hossain, aged eight from Narayanganj Bangladesh had a cataract in each eye and was almost completely blind when Shirin Akhtar, an outreach worker supported by Sightsavers came across her. Her sight had been slowly fading for over a year, and the once familiar faces of her family were becoming blurred.
Smriti lives in a small corrugated, one-room house with her parents, two siblings, aunt and grandfather. Her father is the sole breadwinner and works in a local garment factory earning around £25 a month.
The once happy, outgoing little girl had become more and more introverted as her sight deteriorated.
"She plays and pretends to cook like any little girl but she can't join in with her friends playing games outside, the sunlight hurts her eyes, and she needs help moving around," said her mother Minara.
Smriti has now had both eyes operated on at Islamia Eye Hospital. Her plastic eye shield has protected her eye after the surgery and helped her make a quick recovery.
