A suture is a medical device that surgeons use during cataract surgery to hold the new lens in place. They may be small but these are vital for surgery.
Eight-year-old Hamadie Rashid Tanzania was diagnosed with cataracts; he had no vision at all in his right eye, and only partial vision in the left.
Hamadie couldn’t see the blackboard at school which was making him struggle with his reading and he found it frustrating not being able to keep up with his classmates. Sutures were required in Hamadie’s operation to keep his lens in place.
The gift you’ve been given can help provide a box of sutures for use in cataract operations. Thank you.

Dadan Chand, aged 48, is from Madhya in India. Dadan had been suffering from a gradual loss of sight for the last eight months. He was finding working on his farm increasingly difficult with his deteriorating eye sight. He was no longer able to work at night which is when there is often more electricity, and he was becoming more and more reliant on his son for the family’s income.
Dadan was quoted 2,500 rupees at another hospital for treatment which he was unable to afford. Fortunately the Sightsavers supported Gomabai Netralaya Hospital and has been able to provide surgery free of charge to Dadan, without which his sight would have continued to deteriorate.
Sutures played an important part of the cataract surgery keeping the lens in place. After the operation Dadan was delighted. He will now be able to help his son again on the farm, and will even be able to work at night due to his restored eye sight.
