It’s estimated that 4.5 million people are blind due to glaucoma. About 60.5 million people will have glaucoma by the year 2010. Given the ageing of the world’s population, this number may increase to almost 80 million by 2020.

Ahmadu has already lost his sight in his left eye due to glaucoma and he has now developed a build up of pressure in his right eye. His treatment will release the fluids and pressure on his eye so that he doesn’t lose the vision in that eye as well.
Ahmadu is a tailor and unless his right eye is saved he will no longer be able to work, he has nine children and a wife to support.
Ahmadu is in the hospital along with other patients who are being treated for cataracts. Unlike the cataract patients in the same ward, Ahmadu’s sight won’t return and there will be no difference in his sight, his surgery will only stop any further damage. Therefore, counseling and managing the expectations of Glaucoma patients is a very important part of the treatment.
